相手にかなり配慮しながら、詳しい説明をお願いしたいときに使います。公式な問い合わせ、会議、講演後の質問など、かしこまった場面に向いています。日常の親しい会話ではやや大げさに響くことがある、非常に丁寧で硬めの表現です。

よくある間違い

• ✕ Would you be kind as to explain the issue?

  ○ Would you be so kind as to explain the issue?

  so kind as to の形で使う定型表現です。

• ✕ Would you be so kind as explain the issue?

  ○ Would you be so kind as to explain the issue?

  as の後ろには to explain が必要です。

• ✕ Would you be so kind as to explain me the process?

  ○ Would you be so kind as to explain the process to me?

  explain は人を直接目的語にせず、説明する内容を目的語にして、人には to me のように to を使います。

公式な問い合わせ、会議、講演後の質問、先生や職員への質問など、相手に非常に丁寧に説明をお願いしたい場面で使います。親しい相手には少しかしこまりすぎたり、頻度によっては大げさに響いたりすることがあります。

Would you be so kind as to explain ~? と Could you please explain ~? の違いは？

前者のほうがよりかしこまっていて、へりくだった印象があります。Could you please explain ~? のほうが一般的で、仕事でも日常でも使いやすい表現です。
