何度も努力したもののうまくいかず、もう続けるのをやめようとする時に使います。友達や家族との会話、カジュアルな文章で使われる感情のこもった表現で、正式なビジネス文書や改まった場面にはあまり向きません。

言い換え・似た表現

  より一般的で、感情を込めずにも幅広い場面で使える表現

  今夜はここで終わりにしよう。

  作業をその場で切り上げる時のくだけた表現

  計画や取り組みを完全に放棄する硬めの表現

  敗北を認めるという、やや改まった表現

よくある間違い

• ✕ I'm throwing the towel.

  ○ I'm throwing in the towel.

  inを入れないと、このイディオムになりません。

• ✕ I threw in towel on the project.

  ○ I threw in the towel on the project.

  towelの前には通常、定冠詞theが必要です。

• ✕ I threw in the towel to the exam.

  ○ I threw in the towel on studying for the exam.

  断念する対象には通常onを使い、後ろには名詞または動名詞を置きます。

かなり努力したものの、これ以上続けるのをやめる時に使います。友達との会話など、くだけた場面で使うのが一般的です。

throw in the towel と give up の違いは？

どちらも「あきらめる」という意味ですが、throw in the towel のほうが、努力の末に降参するという感情や状況を強く含みます。give up はより幅広い場面で使えます。
