  単数の名詞の前には、通常 the が必要です。

• ✕ How is the current status of the project?

  status の現状をたずねる場合は、How is ...? より What's ...? が自然です。

その時点での状況、価格、進み具合、待ち時間などを確認したいときに使います。日常会話から仕事まで幅広く使える一般的な表現です。

What's the current ~? は失礼？

失礼ではありませんが、相手や内容によっては少し直接的に聞こえることがあります。より丁寧にするなら、Could you tell me what the current ... is? などが一般的です。
