全体としては問題ないものの、一つだけ例外を挙げたい時に使います。日常会話から仕事上の説明まで幅広く使え、感情的にならずに状況を整理して伝える響きがあります。

会話で使ってみる

言い換え・似た表現

• Everything was fine apart from the noise.

  騒音以外はすべて問題なかった。

  except for と同様に使える表現。英語圏によっては apart from がよく使われる

• Other than one small mistake, the report was excellent.

  小さなミスが一つあった以外は、レポートはすばらしかった。

  例外をやや控えめに伝える表現

• The room was empty except for a single chair.

  椅子が一脚ある以外は、部屋は空だった。

  物の存在を除外する説明に自然な表現

• I enjoyed everything except the ending.

  結末以外は、すべて楽しめた。

  for を省いた形で、会話でよく使われる

• With the exception of Friday, I’m available all week.

  金曜日を除けば、一週間ずっと空いています。

よくある間違い

• ✕ I liked everything except of the ending.

  ○ I liked everything except for the ending.

  except の後に of は置かない

• ✕ Except for I was tired, the day was good.

  ○ Except for being tired, I enjoyed the day.

  except for の後は名詞や動名詞が一般的

• ✕ I went everywhere except for to the museum.

  ○ I went everywhere except the museum.

  場所を除外する時は前置詞を重ねない

全体としては当てはまることを述べた後、一つの例外を付け加える時に使います。物、人、出来事など幅広く続けられます。

except for ~ と apart from ~ の違いは？

どちらも「〜を除けば」という意味で、多くの場合は置き換えられます。apart from は文脈によって「〜に加えて」という意味にもなるため、例外を明確にしたい時は except for が一般的です。
