使う場面とニュアンス

どちらでも

相手の話を聞いて、それまで意識していなかったことに気づいたときに使います。会話の流れを止めずに「そう言われれば」と軽く認める表現で、友人や同僚との会話など、くだけた場面からニュートラルな場面まで使えます。

  ふと思い出したことを切り出す表現

• Now that you bring it up, I remember meeting her.

  そう言われてみれば、彼女に会ったのを思い出した。

  相手が話題に出したことを受ける表現

• You know, you're right about that.

  そうだね、それについては君の言うとおりだ。

  相手の意見への同意を強める表現

• That reminds me, I have a question.

  それで思い出したけど、質問がある。

  関連する別のことを思い出した時に使う

• On second thought, let's wait until tomorrow.

  考え直して、明日まで待とう。

  考え直した結果を伝える時に使う

こう返す

• Exactly. I noticed it too.

  そうそう。私も気づいたよ。

• Maybe, but I'm not completely sure.

  たぶんね。でも完全には確信がないな。

よくある間違い

• ✕ Now you mention it, I agree.

  ○ Now that you mention it, I agree.

  定型表現では that が必要です。

• ✕ If you say so, I remember it now.

  ○ Now that you mention it, I remember it now.

  If you say so は納得しきれない同意になり、意味が異なります。

• ✕ Now that you mention about it, I see your point.

  ○ Now that you mention it, I see your point.

  mention の直後に about は置きません。

now that you mention it はどんな時に使う？

相手の発言をきっかけに、忘れていたことや新たに気づいたことを認める時に使います。「そう言われてみれば」「そういえば」に近い自然な表現です。

now that you mention it は失礼？

一般的には失礼ではなく、会話でよく使われる柔らかな表現です。ただし、深刻な話題では軽く聞こえることがあるため、声の調子や前後の言葉に配慮します。
