どちらでも

二つの候補や可能性を比べて、どちらかに絞って伝えたいときに使います。日常会話で使える自然な表現ですが、選択肢が本当に二つに限られるとはっきりしている場面で使うと、より適切です。

会話で使ってみる

言い換え・似た表現

• If it isn't A, it's B.

  Aでなければ、Bです。

  元の表現より少し短く、意味はほぼ同じ

• If it's not A, then it's B.

  Aでなければ、その場合はBです。

  thenを加えて、条件から結論に至る流れをやや強調する表現

• Either it's A or it's B.

  AかBのどちらかです。

  二つの選択肢を同じ重さで示す表現

• If A isn't true, then B is.

  Aが正しくなければ、Bが正しいです。

  元の表現より説明的で、判断や議論の場面でも使いやすい表現

• It has to be either A or B.

  AかBのどちらかのはずです。

  候補を二つに絞る、確信の強い言い方

こう返す

• That sounds like the most likely explanation.

  それが一番ありそうな説明だね。

• It could actually be something else.

  実は別のものかもしれないよ。

よくある間違い

• ✕ If it doesn't Monday, it's Tuesday.

  ○ If it's not Monday, it's Tuesday.

  曜日を主語にして「〜である」と言うときは、動詞ではなくbe動詞を使います。

• ✕ If it's not rain, it's sunny.

  ○ If it's not raining, it's sunny.

  「雨が降っている」という天候の状態は、通常 raining で表します。

• ✕ If it's not the left, it's the right.

  ○ If it's not on the left, it's on the right.

  位置を表すときは、通常 on the left や on the right を使います。
