会話で使ってみる

言い換え・似た表現

• It could be either a mistake or a misunderstanding.

  間違いか、誤解のどちらかかもしれない。

  可能性をやや控えめに伝える表現

• Either the key is missing or the lock is broken.

  鍵がないか、錠が壊れているかのどちらかだ。

よくある間違い

• ✕ It's either a delay and a cancellation.

  ○ It's either a delay or a cancellation.

  二つの選択肢を並べるときは、andではなくorを使う。

• ✕ It's either to stay or leaving.

  ○ It's either staying or leaving.

  eitherの後に並べる選択肢は、動名詞など同じ形にそろえる。

• ✕ It's either the train is late or canceled.

  ○ Either the train is late, or it has been canceled.

  主語を含む二つの節を並べる場合は、Eitherを文頭に置き、それぞれの節を文として成立させる。
