どちらでも

思い込みや「絶対にこうだ」という決めつけを、はっきり否定したい時に使います。友達との会話から説明や議論まで使えますが、言い方によっては少し強く聞こえることがあります。

言い換え・似た表現

よくある間違い

  この構文では通常 no such thing as を使う

• ✕ There are no such thing as a perfect solution.

  thing が単数なので There is になる

• ✕ There is no such thing of a perfect solution.

There is no such thing as ~. はどんな時に使う？

思い込みや決めつけを否定し、「そんなものはない」とはっきり伝える時に使います。一般論として述べることもできますが、強く聞こえる場合があります。

There is no such thing as ~. は失礼？

表現自体が失礼というわけではありませんが、相手の考えを強く否定するため、言い方によっては冷たく聞こえます。I don’t think there’s such a thing as ～. とすると、やや柔らかくなります。
