ある出来事や状況が、誰かや何かの問題・不便につながっていることをはっきり説明するときに使います。日常会話でも使えますが、少し説明的で、原因と結果を明確に結びつける響きがあります。

会話で使ってみる

言い換え・似た表現

• The open window is why the room has so much cold air.

  窓が開いているから、部屋にこんなに冷たい空気が入っているんだ。

  元の表現より会話的で、日常の説明に向く

• The old software is causing the printer to have connection problems.

  古いソフトウェアがプリンターの接続トラブルを引き起こしている。

  原因をより直接的に伝える表現

• Because of the mountain road, the bus has a longer route.

  山道のせいで、バスの経路が長くなっている。

  原因を文頭に置く自然な言い換え

  遅延は列車の信号トラブルが原因です。

  やや丁寧で、案内や仕事でも使いやすい

よくある間違い

• ✕ The old software is the reason has the printer problems.

  ○ The old software is the reason the printer has problems.

  the reason の後ろには主語を置き、節の語順を崩さない。

• ✕ The old software is the reason for the printer has problems.

  ○ The old software is the reason the printer has problems.

  この型では reason の後ろに節を置くため、for は使わない。

• ✕ The old software is reason the printer has problems.

  ○ The old software is the reason the printer has problems.

  reason はこの意味では通常 the reason の形で使う。
