どちらでも

お店や市場、旅行先などで、商品の値段やサービス料金を知りたいときに使います。短く直接的な表現ですが、普通の声の調子なら失礼にはなりません。

よくある間違い

• ✕ How many is this book?

  ○ How much is this book?

  値段を聞くときは、数をたずねるmanyではなく、量や金額をたずねるmuchを使います。

• ✕ How much this book is?

  ○ How much is this book?

  直接疑問文では、be動詞を主語の前に置きます。

• ✕ How much is these tickets?

  ○ How much are these tickets?

  主語が複数の名詞なので、isではなくareを使います。

How much ~? はどんな時に使う？

物やサービスの値段・料金をたずねるときに使います。お店、飲食店、旅行先などで一般的です。

How much ~? と How much does this cost? の違いは？

どちらも値段を聞く表現です。How much ~? は、後ろにisやareなどを続けて使います。How much does this cost? は「これはいくらかかりますか」と、文全体でたずねる表現です。
