受付や職場で、相手が別の人と話していて今すぐ対応できないことを落ち着いて伝える場面で使います。talking to よりやや改まった響きがあり、ビジネス上の案内にも適しています。

会話で使ってみる

言い換え・似た表現

• ~ is talking to ~ right now.

  〜は今まさに〜と話しています。

  元の表現よりカジュアルで、日常会話向きの表現です。

• ~ is currently speaking with ~.

  〜は現在、〜と話しています。

  現在の状況をやや事務的に伝える表現です。

• ~ is in a meeting with ~ right now.

  〜は今、〜と会議中です。

  単に話しているのではなく、会議中だと明確にする表現です。

• ~ is on the phone with ~ at the moment.

  〜は今、〜と電話中です。

  電話で話している場合に限定して使う表現です。

よくある間違い

• ✕ She is speaking with now her manager.

  ○ She is speaking with her manager now.

  目的語は speaking with の直後に置き、now は文末に置くのが自然です。

• ✕ She speaks with her manager now.

  ○ She is speaking with her manager now.

  今まさに進行中の動作には、通常は現在進行形を使います。

• ✕ He is speaking to with the customer now.

  ○ He is speaking with the customer now.

  speak to と speak with を混ぜず、どちらか一方を使います。

is speaking with と is talking to の違いは？
