競合する

「競合する」の英語

「競合する」は英語で compete と言います。相手と競うなら compete with、契約や賞などをめざして争うなら compete for が自然です。試合の相手には compete against も使えます。

特定の相手や企業と競合するときに使う基本表現です。

契約、賞、仕事などを得るために競うときに使います。

3社が建設契約をめぐって競合しました。
compete against
試合や対戦で、特定の相手と競う場面に向いています。
Our school will compete against its strongest rival.
私たちの学校は最大のライバル校と対戦します。

She will compete against the champion next week.

彼女は来週、チャンピオンと競争するだろう。

同じ目標や賞をめざして、複数の人やチームが力をぶつけ合う

compete: 同じ目標や賞をめざして競う、自動詞でfor/withを伴う
rival: 同じ相手と競う、相手を強調して使う
contest: 勝敗や権利を争う、試合や論争で使われる

competeは、ラテン語のcom（ともに）＋petere（求める）がもとで「同じものを求めて競う＝競争する」という意味になった

competeは基本的に自動詞で直接目的語を取らないため「compete the project」のような誤用は避け、'compete for the contract'や'compete with rival firms'の形が自然

○ We compete for the new project.

compete は通常、目的語を直接取らず、for などの前置詞を使います。
× Our product competes to that company.

○ Our product competes with that company’s product.

相手を表す前置詞は to ではなく with が一般的です。また、製品同士を比較する場合は company’s product のように表すと自然です。
