至近距離

「至近距離」の英語

「至近距離」は英語で close range と言います。歩いて行ける近さなら within walking distance、くだけて「すぐ近く」と言うなら a hop, skip, and a jump が使えます。

close range
人や物が非常に近い距離にあることを表す、見出しに最も直接対応する表現です。
The camera captures clear images at close range.
そのカメラは至近距離で鮮明な画像を撮影できます。
within walking distance
歩いて行ける近さを表す、実用的な定番表現です。
The hotel is within walking distance of the subway station.
そのホテルは地下鉄の駅から歩いて行ける距離です。
a hop, skip, and a jump
「すぐ近く」という意味の、くだけた会話表現です。
The café is a hop, skip, and a jump from here.
そのカフェはここからすぐ近くです。
at close range
写真撮影や観察などで、対象から非常に近い距離で行うことを表します。
The photographer took the picture at close range.
その写真家は至近距離から写真を撮りました。

Their cottage is only a hop-step-and-jump from the beach.

彼らの小屋はビーチから至近距離にある。

ごく短くてすぐ着く距離を指す表現

hop-step-and-jumpは、a hop, skip and a jump と同根の語組で、個々の動作を並べることで「至近距離」という意味を生んだ英語の慣用表現である。

ハイフンでつながれた形は会話や記事で見られ、a hop, skip and a jump のような別形も存在するため表記の揺れがあることを念頭に置くと実用的である。

○ It is a short distance from here.

near distance という言い方は不自然です。
× I did a short distance to the station.

○ I walked a short distance to the station.

距離を移動する場合は do ではなく walk などを使います。
