「逆接接続詞」の英語

「逆接接続詞」は英語で adversative conjunction と言います。具体的には but、although、yet などがあり、however は接続副詞として使われます。

but
会話から作文まで、二つの内容を対比するときの基本語です。
I wanted to stay, but I had to leave.
残りたかったのですが、帰らなければなりませんでした。
although
「〜だけれども」という意味で、従属節を導くやや改まった接続詞です。
Although the task was difficult, we completed it.
その作業は難しかったものの、私たちは終えました。
yet
予想に反する対比を強調する接続詞で、but よりやや文章語的です。
The device is small, yet it is very powerful.
その装置は小さいのに、とても強力です。
adversative conjunction
but、although、yet など、対立する内容を結ぶ語を指す文法用語です。
An adversative conjunction links two contrasting clauses.
逆接接続詞は、対立する二つの節を結びます。

adversative conjunctionは、adversative（ラテン語adversus「向かい合う・反対の」に由来し対立を示す意）とconjunction（ラテン語con-「共に」＋jungere「結ぶ」に由来する語で接続するもの）が結合して、対立を結ぶ接続詞を指す語として成立した。

英語では but, however, yet などが逆接接続詞に当たり、会話では but がよく使われ書き言葉では however や yet を好む傾向がある。

but と however は通常、同じ文で重ねません。
× Although it was late, but she continued working.

○ Although it was late, she continued working.

although と but は同じ節で併用しません。
