「文の役割」の英語

「文の役割」は英語で the function of a sentence と言います。文脈によっては the role of a sentence や the purpose of a sentence も使えます。言語学では sentential function という専門的な表現もあります。

語源

sentential functionは、sententialがsentence（ラテン語sententia「判断・意見」から）＋形容詞接尾辞-alで『文に関する』を示し、functionがラテン語functio由来で『働き』を示す語の組み合わせで文の働きを表す語となった。
