頭字語
「頭字語」の英語
「頭字語」は英語で acronym と言います。NATOのように一語として読むものは acronym、FBIのように文字を一つずつ読むものは initialism と呼ぶのが一般的です。文書では最初に正式名称を示すと親切です。
「頭字語」の英語の使い分け
複数語の頭文字から作り、一語として読む頭字語に使います。
NATO is a well-known acronym for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
FBIのように、頭文字を一文字ずつ読む頭字語に使います。
頭字語に限らず、語や語句を短くした表現全般を指します。
