「トピック化」の英語

「トピック化」は英語で topicalization と言います。言語学では文の要素を話題として扱うことを指しますが、一般的な文脈では make something a topic of discussion や bring something into the spotlight のほうが自然です。

「トピック化」の英語の使い分け

topicalization
言語学やメディア研究で使われる専門的な名詞です。特に言語学では、文の要素を話題として扱うことを指します。
In this sentence, topicalization puts the object at the beginning.
この文では、話題化によって目的語が文頭に置かれます。
make something a topic of discussion
ある事柄を議論の話題にするときに使う、一般的で自然な表現です。
The article made school lunches a topic of discussion.

語源

topicalizationは、topic（ギリシャ語 topos「場所」由来）＋-alize（動詞化）＋-ation（名詞化）という構成から生じ、「話題にすること」の意味になった。

「トピック化」を英語にするときのよくある間違い

× The media did topicalization of the issue.

○ The media made the issue a topic.

topicalization は一般動詞のように do と組み合わせる語ではありません。
× The article topicized the problem.

○ The article brought the problem into the spotlight.

topicalize は専門的な動詞で、一般的な記事の動作を表す場合には不自然です。
