ある語や表現が実際に使われる状況や場面を指し、使用実態を説明するときに使えます。
専門用語に限らず、発話や文章の意味を判断する周囲の状況全般を指します。

linguistic contextは、形容詞linguistic（ラテン語lingua「舌・言語」に由来）と名詞context（ラテン語contexere「織り合わせる」に由来）が結びついた複合語で、発話を取り巻く言語的要素を指す表現として成立した。
