「主題文」の英語
「主題文」は英語で topic sentence と言います。段落の中心となる考えを示す一文で、エッセイ全体の主張を示す thesis statement とは範囲が異なります。

語源
topic sentenceは、ギリシャ語topos（場所・話題）に由来するtopicと、ラテン語sententia（意見・考え）に由来するsentenceが結びつき、段落の主題を示す文を表す語として成立した。
