起伏
「起伏」の英語
「起伏」は英語で unevenness と言います。地形や表面の緩やかな起伏には undulation、丘の多い地形の起伏には hilliness、道路などの上り下りには ups and downs も使えます。
「起伏」の英語の使い分け
地形や表面がゆるやかに上下する様子を表す、やや formal な語です。
The map clearly shows the gentle undulation of the coastal plain.
丘が多く起伏のある地形であることや、その程度を表します。
ups and downs
道路や道などの連続する上り下りを、日常的に表します。
地面や表面が平らでなく、起伏や凹凸があることを一般的に表します。

「起伏」を英語にするときのよくある間違い
× The landscape has many hilliness.
○ The landscape is very hilly.
hilliness は通常、数えられない名詞なので many は使えません。この場合は形容詞 hilly を使うのが自然です。
× The land is very undulation.
○ The terrain is very undulating.
undulation は名詞なので、地形の状態を説明するには形容詞 undulating を使います。
