「メルカリ震度階級」は英語で Mercalli scale と言います。地震そのものの規模ではなく、各地で観測された揺れや被害に基づいて、地震の強さを表す尺度です。改訂メルカリ震度階級は Modified Mercalli intensity scale（MMI）とも呼ばれます。
