Ascaris lumbricoidesは、属名Ascarisが古代ギリシャ語askaris（腸寄生虫）に由来し、種小名lumbricoidesはラテン語lumbricus（ミミズ）＋接尾辞-oides（〜に似た）から「ミミズに似た回虫」の意で命名された。
