「SL」の英語
「SL」は英語で steam locomotive と言います。英語ではこの正式名称が最も一般的ですが、文脈によっては SL という略称が使われることもあります。保存運転や観光列車についても使える表現です。

語源
steam locomotiveは、steam（蒸気）とlocomotive（自走車両）の合成語で、locomotiveはloco-（場所）＋move（動く）に由来し19世紀に鉄道の自走機関を指す語として定着した。
