語源

first-class honours degreeは、first-class（最上位の等級）とhonours degree（学業成績による区分）が結びついた語で、firstは古英語で「最初・第一」を示し、honourはラテン語honorを経て「名誉」を表す語として学位の格付けに用いられるようになった
