「多色性の」は英語で pleochroic と言います。宝石や鉱物について、見る方向や偏光の状態によって異なる色を示す性質を表す専門用語です。一般的な「色とりどりの」は multicolored です。

pleochroicは、ギリシャ語のpleon（多い）とchroma/chroa（色）に由来し、「多くの色を示す」との意味から、角度や偏光で色が変わる性質を表す語になった。
