「簡約式」は英語で empirical formula と言います。化学で、元素の最も簡単な整数比を示す式です。分子中の原子の実際の数を示す molecular formula（分子式）とは区別します。

語源
empirical formulaは、empiricalがギリシャ語empeiria「経験」に由来し、formulaはラテン語formula「定型・小さな形」から来て、実験に基づく最も簡単な原子比を表す語として成立した。
